The Camino de Santiago is a pilgrimage route in Spain that has been traveled for centuries. Up until recently, pilgrims walking the Camino de Santiago would have worn relatively simple and durable footwear and clothing suitable for long-distance walking. Here's what pilgrims might have worn during that time:

  • Boots or Shoes: Pilgrims would have worn sturdy leather boots or shoes. These would typically be mid to high-cut to provide ankle support and protection from rough terrain. The exact style and quality of footwear could vary depending on the pilgrim's resources.

  • Clothing: Pilgrims typically wore practical and comfortable clothing suitable for walking long distances. This often included loose-fitting shirts, trousers or skirts, and possibly a cloak or poncho for protection against the elements. Clothing would have been made from natural fibers like wool or cotton.

  • Backpacks or Satchels: Pilgrims carried their belongings in simple bags or satchels made of cloth or leather. These would contain personal items, food, and sometimes a change of clothing.

  • Hats: Hats were commonly worn to protect the head and face from the sun. Pilgrims might have worn a variety of hat styles, from wide-brimmed hats to simpler caps.

  • Walking Staff or Stick: Many pilgrims used a walking staff or stick for support and stability during their journey. It could also be used for protection and as a tool.

  • Pilgrim's Scallop Shell: One iconic symbol of the Camino de Santiago is the scallop shell, often worn by pilgrims as a symbol of their pilgrimage. It could be sewn onto clothing or hung from a backpack.

Today, modern pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago often wear specialized gear and clothing designed for long-distance walking, which is quite different from what pilgrims of the early 20th century would have worn.

Here's a guide on what we suggest to bring, emphasizing the essential and recommended items for each category and some key packing tips.

Clothing: Essential and Recommended
  • Essentials: Moisture-wicking shirts, comfortable hiking pants, and a reliable rain jacket.

  • Recommended: Layered clothing is key. Bring a mix of short and long-sleeve shirts, a lightweight fleece or sweater, and hats for sun and rain protection. Consider the time of year and expected weather. Minimalist pilgrims often wash clothes daily, so quick-drying fabrics are ideal.

  • Personal Experience: I brought 2 walking outfits, washing what I wore every evening and letting it dry overnight. I packed cotton shorts and two extra lightweight shirts for the evenings and for sleeping.

Footwear: Comfort and Durability

  • This could be the most broadly debated topic of the Camino. It's a personal choice and this picture shows the diversity of choices that people make

  • Essential: Comfortable, broken-in hiking shoes or trail runners. Ensure they are well-fitted, easily adjustable as your feet swell, and suited for long-distance walking.

  • Recommended: Invest in quality moisture-wicking wool socks to prevent blisters.  Change your socks frequently throughout each day.  Never wear cotton socks.

  • Personal Experience:  After research, I chose to walk in trail runners.  My approach was to buy multiple pairs of the same trail runners so I could train in the same model of shoes that I planned to take with me.  Starting with newer shoes ensured the shoes would last throughout the journey.

Gear: Must-Haves and Useful Extras

  • Essential Gear: A well-fitting backpack is paramount. If you have never had a professional fitting at a store like REI or EMS, then please treat yourself to this experience. Another essential is a lightweight water bottle.  Refrain from bringing your insulated Yeti flask.

  • Recommended Gear: Trekking poles for support, a headlamp or flashlight, and sun protection gear.

  • Experienced pilgrims will decorate their packs with patches like flags from their homeland and other items.  Your first decoration will likely be a scallop shell.

Toiletries and First Aid: Minimalist Approach
  • Essentials: Basic toiletries, sunscreen, and a small first aid kit focused on blister care.

  • Recommended: Opt for lightweight items like small nail clippers and compact combs. Ultralight containers for health and beauty products can save weight.

Packing Tips
  • Weight Distribution: Heavier items should be packed close to your back and higher up in the backpack.

  • Organizing: Use packing cubes or dry bags to keep your belongings organized and easily accessible.  There are things that you will want quick access to while walking and things you won’t need until you’re at your destination.

  • Versatility and Lightness: Every gram counts. Choose items that serve multiple purposes and are lightweight.

  • Preparation: Test your gear before you go. Pack your bag and take some long walks to ensure everything is comfortable.

  • Practice: It may sound silly, but before your departure, you should practice living out of your pack for a few days

Accessibility of Supplies
  • Depending on your route, you will likely pass through larger cities where almost anything can be purchased.

  • In smaller villages, many items, especially toiletries, and some clothing/gear, can be found at local pharmacies and markets.

Final Advice

By the time you start, you should be comfortable carrying your pack.  After your third or fourth day on the Camino, your pack becomes part of your body.  By the time you finish your Camino, your pack will be a badge of honor.

Remember that the Camino de Santiago is more than a physical challenge; it's a path of personal growth and spiritual reflection. Packing thoughtfully means balancing preparedness with the freedom of traveling light. As you walk through the diverse landscapes and villages, let your journey be guided not just by the physical weight of your pack, but by the lightness of being present in the moment.
