Is optimism a form of spirituality?

Day 16

Cahors to Montcuq

I’m an optimist. I have developed super powers that revolve around this trait. For instance, I always get a good parking spot. Good things happen to me. You could say that’s there’s never been a cloud over my head but I used to live in Seattle…

So what’s this have to do with the Camino? While walking today I was thinking broadly about spirituality, and then specifically about my spirituality. Generally speaking, I’m about a 4 out of 5 on the scale defined on the Camino Cornerstones website (Note: For a quick refresher on SPIRITUALITY, please visit our web page. I had to do it, so don’t feel bad about reading up on it 🤪).

I meditate (especially while walking, riding and practicing yoga). I practice mindfulness. I often reflect. I feel like I’m in touch with my values and purpose. And, I believe in interconnectedness of people and things.

Which leads me to Optimism. I think optimism is a form of faith. I believe in good and have faith that things will work out. Of course I’m disappointed sometimes, just like something I don’t get that perfect parking spot. But I believed there’s a reason for that and have faith that it will work out in the end. Does that make optimism a form of manifestation?

So many things to ponder…. Good thing I have 15 more days on this Camino.

Today was tough for me. After the first half, I lost interest and focus. I was distracted by the distance, the heat, and other things. Plus it was really boring. Gone are the beautiful landscapes and the cow bells. As my friend Rick said, gone are the intoxicants that distract us….

The next few days will be all me. (Morgan…. This is where it gets scary). But it will work out. I’ll find a nugget of something to keep me going.

Tomorrow brings rain and lots of it. Fortunately it’s a short day.
