Throughout our lives, we invest immense time and energy into building our careers. From a young age, we prepare through education, gaining skills, and climbing the professional ladder. This dedication often becomes the cornerstone of our identity.

Seeking Purpose Finding New Hobbies

However, as retirement approaches, many of us realize we haven't given the same level of thought and preparation to this next significant phase of life. The dichotomy is stark: we meticulously plan our careers but often neglect to prepare emotionally and socially for living a life after work.

Depression and Lonliness

This lack of preparation can lead to feelings of boredom, loneliness, and a loss of purpose affects nearly 28% of retirees, almost three times the national average for Americans. I experienced this first-hand.

The Camino Experience

During my transition from work, I found myself at a crossroads, unsure of what my next steps should be. I decided to walk the Camino de Santiago, a historic pilgrimage route across Spain. This journey became a profound metaphor for the life-transition and offered many insights that are now integral to a program that I have developed called STEP & LEAP. The Step & Leap program guides individuals through a transformative journey into retirement.

Solitude and Reflection

On the Camino, I walked alone for hours each day, which provided rare opportunities for deep reflection. Without the usual distractions of work and everyday life, I processed past experiences, grieved unresolved losses, and contemplated my future. This solitude became a source of immense clarity and peace. I realized that this kind of reflective time is crucial for anyone experiencing a transition, especially into retirement. This time allows us to make sense of our past and envision our future with greater clarity.

Embracing Vulnerability

The Camino also taught me the power of vulnerability. Stripped of my professional identity, I found myself opening up to strangers in ways I never had before. Sharing my fears about retirement, my hopes for the future, and even my insecurities created deep, meaningful connections with fellow pilgrims. It reminded me that in retirement, as in life, it’s essential to be open and honest with ourselves and others about our experiences and emotions.

Managing Expectations

Another significant lesson from the Camino was the impact of expectations on our emotional well-being. Initially, my expectations were misaligned with the reality of the pilgrimage. I expected a social, joyous journey but faced loneliness and logistical challenges. However, as I adjusted my expectations and embraced the journey for what it was, I found a new sense of fulfillment. This taught me that in retirement, managing our expectations is crucial. By being flexible and open to new experiences, we can find joy and purpose even in unexpected places.

Rediscovering Purpose

Perhaps the most important insight from my journey was the need for a new sense of purpose. On the Camino, my daily purpose was clear—reach Santiago, take care of my body, and support fellow pilgrims. These small, daily purposes gave my life structure and meaning. In retirement, finding new purposes, whether through hobbies, community roles, or family involvement, is essential for maintaining a sense of self and fulfillment.

Introducing the STEP & LEAP Program

The STEP & LEAP program emphasizes this by helping you identify and pursue meaningful activities that resonate with your values and interests.

STEP: Active Preparation and Discovery

The first phase of the program, STEP, focuses on active preparation and discovery. Here’s how it works:

S - Set Intentions: The Camino taught me the importance of having clear intentions. Whether it was reaching Santiago or finding new meaning in life, setting clear goals helped me stay focused and motivated. In the STEP & LEAP program, we help you define your goals, lifestyle, values, and aspirations for this new phase of life.

T - Transition Smoothly: Preparing for retirement isn’t just about finances; it’s also about mental and practical readiness. On the Camino, I learned to adapt to daily challenges and find comfort in new routines. We guide you through reducing work hours gradually, starting new hobbies, and engaging in counseling if needed to ensure a smooth transition away from a work-centered life.

E - Engage Socially: The Camino fostered deep connections with fellow pilgrims, teaching me the importance of social engagement. Building and strengthening social networks outside of work is crucial. We encourage you to join communities, groups, or clubs that align with your interests, ensuring you remain connected and supported.

P - Pursue Purpose: The journey to Santiago was filled with moments of reflection and purpose. In the program, we emphasize the importance of embarking on transformative journeys or pilgrimages to reflect on your life’s achievements and contemplate future aspirations. These experiences can be deeply rewarding and provide a renewed sense of purpose.

Living Their Retirement Dreams

LEAP: Living Your Dreams

The second phase, LEAP, focuses on living your dreams and fully embracing the new phase of life. Here’s how we support this:

L - Live Your Values: Integrating the values and insights gained during the Camino into daily life was transformative for me. In the program, we help you identify and live by these core values, ensuring they guide your actions and interactions.

E - Enrich Relationships: The personal growth I experienced on the Camino enhanced my relationships. We encourage you to use your insights to strengthen bonds with family and friends and form new, enriching connections that add value to your life.

A - Adapt and Adjust: Flexibility is key. The Camino taught me to adapt to new challenges and embrace change. We support you in adjusting your lifestyle as needed to stay aligned with your evolving interests and capabilities, ensuring you remain fulfilled.

P - Promote Wellness and Well-being: Maintaining physical and mental health is crucial for a vibrant retirement. The physical demands of the Camino emphasized the importance of regular exercise, proper nutrition, and continuous learning. Our program focuses on these aspects to ensure you remain healthy and engaged in fulfilling activities.

Crafting Your Next Adventure

The STEP & LEAP Program invites you to take a thoughtful step into a new phase of discovery and growth. Your career has shaped the world in countless ways; now, imagine the impact of stepping into retirement with intention, purpose, and vision.

The tailored path presented by the STEP & LEAP program prepares you to not only face the future but to shape it.
